In 2015, the dubious environmental approval of the "Porto Baleia" real state Project in southern Brazil caught the attention of researchers and environmentalists. The area is surrounded by a environmental reserve, and the adjacent river flows into waters protected by a world surfing reserve (Guarda do Embaú beach). These waters still ranges a southern right whale protection zone. A group of researchers from the Federal University of Santa Catarina came together and analyzed the environmental impact study. After identifying several misunderstandings and poorly implemented methodologies, they managed with the Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office to cancel its implementation
