Monitoring humpback whales in Brazil

Baleia Jubarte Institute' Project and Aracruz Celulose.

Coordinators : Marcia Engel and Leonardo Wedekin

Every 3 years, the Humpback Whale Institute (from Portuguese: "Instituto Baleia Jubarte") conducts an aerial line transect survey for sampling humpback whales in Brazilian waters. The objectives are to estimate the population growth of humpback whales in Brazil and prevent their migration route from overlapping cellulose ships routes. Cellulose ships operates close to the largest known concentration of humpback whales in Brazil, the Abrolhos Archipelago
